Are You an Expert in Your Field?

January 2nd 2015 13:27:20 PM

What makes someone an expert? Is it the number of clients they have on their roster? The number of products they are capable of servicing? The variety of inventory items they possess? Is an expert someone with years of experience under their belt, or are they the new business who has proven themselves capable of mastering new technologies and trends?

According to Merriam Webster, an expert is someone who has or displays a special skill or knowledge derived from training or experience. They are specialized in their service and singular in the focus. Rather than offering a variety of services and products, they are committed to serving one area and serving it well. Experts can be found in any field, but they cannot be duplicated or copied.

Experts are one-of-a-kind, the top dogs in the industry.

It Takes an Expert: How to Position Yourself as an Expert in Your Field
In a world filled with so many self-proclaimed “experts”, how is one to determine the expert from the rest? More importantly, are you fulfilling the role of expert in your field? Contrary to popular belief, it takes more than slapping the label of “expert” on your back to fulfill the role. No matter the industry or field, experts possess a unique set of characteristics and skillsets. Here are a few tips to help you position yourself as an expert in your field:

  1. Become knowledgeable about the products and services you offer. Experts know their stuff. When their clients ask them questions about their products and services, they have an answer. While you are not expected to know everything, knowing where to find that information is key to becoming an expert.
  2. Put in the time. You don’t become an expert overnight. You need to have significant experience working with the knowledge you possess in order to set yourself apart. As an expert, you need to be able to apply the things you’ve learned in creative ways, solve problems that have no pre-existing solutions, and identify problems that no one else has yet identified. This takes time and a whole lot of perseverance.
  3. Develop excellent communication skills. Experts are not only good at what they do – they are good at communicating what they do. If you wish to position yourself as an expert in your field, you need to develop your communication skills.
  4. Create a name for yourself in social realms. Whether this is on social media networks or through traditional networking, commit to getting to know other people in your field – and allowing them to know you. Expertise is, after all, ultimately social. The exchange of new ideas and approaches to problems occurs in a social environment, connecting you to the people who need your knowledge.
